Introduction

This is a practice-based programme informed by key theoretical considerations from the disciplines of media, visual arts and design. It is designed to develop creative practitioners and to give students extensive knowledge of the principles of media practice and processes applied in the creative industries. The potential for the programme is centred upon rapid technological change and development in the creative industries.

Media exists in many different forms: photography, animation, multimedia, television, film and visual communications.  This programme develops your skills of these media and enables you to produce an innovative portfolio of work that will give you the edge in an increasingly competitive graduate market.
 

Programme Features

Broad applications
Develop your media skills across a range of platforms, including photography, television, film and visual communications.


Live projects
Working with your peers as well as individually, to build up your portfolio, and working to produce a final project.  You will have opportunities to exhibit your work through curating student-led exhibitions in the Graduate Show.


Career-ready graduates
Work towards becoming an all-round practitioner and learn how to manage creative projects. 
Upon successful completion, you will have the skills and demonstrative ability to succeed in the job market and real-world environments.

 

Modules

Media in Context

The module will explore themes in media, offering you the opportunity to explore your own area of interest in more depth and engage with the body of knowledge in that area. The module will help you to contextualise your own work, and that of others within the wider media landscape.

Exploring Media Practice 1 

For this module, you will work collaboratively in a small group to conceptualise and realise a media artefact, developing skills in experience design, development, presentation and exhibition.

Exploring Media Practice 2 

You will work collaboratively, building on what you have learned in previous practice, to create a media artefact, relating your work to a specific industry, a specific artist, or other discreet professional practice

Media Project Research and Development

In this module, you will initiate, negotiate and research the concept for their major media project. You may work individually or collaboratively in small groups to propose creative, experimental and clearly developed media concepts and products.

The Major Media Project 

Working under the guidance of a supervisor, in this module you will create a major media project in your chosen specialist industry area. This will form the basis of your creative portfolio and be exhibited as part of the Graduation Show. 

Academic English for the Arts 

The aim of this module is to develop your academic English and communicative skills. The module offers you strategies for conceptualising, planning, drafting, revising and editing longer assignments such as final-year projects and dissertations. The module includes tasks that focus on teamwork and foster learner autonomy with the aim of improving your ability to communicate effectively in the academic and professional world of the arts.

Importance of choosing a non-local top-up with QF Level 5

Employment
  • Degree qualifications pitched at QF Level 5 are formally recognised by the HKSAR Government for employment purposes within the Civil Service for graduate posts.

Further Studies
  • Having been recognised at QF Level 5, this top-up degree programme meets the standard of locally-accredited bachelor's degree programmes.  Upon graduation, students can pursue their further studies at Master’s degree level in Hong Kong or Overseas.

Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements

Holders of VTC Higher Diploma (HD) in relevant Design subject:
  • HD in Animation and Visual Effects
  • HD in Creative Media
  • HD in Digital Music and Media
  • HD in Film, Television and Photography
  • HD in Film and Television
  • HD in Transmedia

OR

Holders of Higher Diploma (HD) or Associate Degree (AD) or equivalent qualification in relevant Design subjects awarded by a recognised institution will also be considered.  Shortlisted applicants will be invited to submit their portfolio of work and attend an admission interview conducted by Coventry University and SHAPE staff.


 

English Proficiency Requirements

  • Applicants holding post-secondary qualifications (e.g. Higher Diploma, Associate Degree) taught and assessed in English from recognised institutions;

OR

  • At least an overall IELTS score of 6.0, or equivalent.

 

Fees & Funding

Fees

  • Application Fee : HK$200 (No application fee before the deadline!)
  • Registration Fee : HK$3,500
  • Tuition Fee : HK$91,850 by 2 instalments
     (Deduct up to HK$33,740 via NMTSS)


The tuition fee is as low as HK$18,110 if you are eligible for NMTSS and receive SPSS Outstanding Performance Scholarship (OPS).
(i.e. Tuition Fee HK$91,850 - NMTSS HK$33,740 - OPS HK$40,000)

Eligible students for NMTSS only need to pay the tuition fee net of NMTSS. After admission, students with outstanding academic performance at sub-degree level will be nominated for OPS and the awardees will receive the scholarship around July/August next year. The disbursement of NMTSS and the award of OPS will be subject to the final approval by the Education Bureau (EDB).

Career Prospects/ Further Studies

Career Prospects

The programme supports the career aspirations of students to enter the creative industries as practitioners in film and television, visual media, graphic design or animation. The broad exposure to technology and the critical evaluation of the ever-changing global media landscape facilitates employment in related fields such as communications, public relations and design fields.

Having been recognised at QF Level 5, this top-up degree programme meets the standard of locally-accredited bachelor's degree programmes. Upon graduation, students can pursue their further studies at Master’s degree level in Hong Kong or Overseas.
