BA (Hons) Fashion Design graduates shine in the DFA Hong Kong Young Design Talent Award 2022

Alize Lam Yeuk Hei and Ng Tsz Kwan, graduates from BA (Hons) Fashion Design, Nottingham Trent University, won the CreateSmart Young Design Talent Award (Product & Industrial Design) and Young Design Talent Special Mention Award respectively in the DFA Hong Kong Young Design Talent Award 2022 (DFA HKYDTA).

Alize spent some years in the fashion industry after graduation, first as a designer, and later in marketing. Frustrated by overproduction and overconsumption, she knew it was time to make a change. In 2020, Alize founded her own upcycling studio, In Wonderland Co. designing self-assembly kits, as she feels the handicraft experience creates a bond between the consumer and the product, showing how sustainability can be integrated into daily life. Her two designs fully demonstrated her belief - ‘Winebox Accordion’, made with paper and recycled winebox wood, applies basic origami techniques to produce an accordion, and ‘Screaming Chicken’ uses similar techniques to make a funny toy to replace the non-biodegradable plastic one.

Ng Tsz Kwan is a recent graduate of SHAPE, her final year project, ‘Hermaphrodite’, is a unisex collection designed with the LGBTQ+ community in mind: androgynous designs are applied on sheer, light materials, with less focus on the silhouette. ‘Geometry and Lines’ is another collection with a bold, flamboyant three-dimensional design for the sleeves and pants, inspired by Picasso’s paintings. Ng Tsz Kwan’s goal is to establish her own eco-friendly design label that supports the LGBT+ community.

The DFA HKYDTA aims to nurture up-and-coming design practitioners and design graduates aged 18-35. It recognises promising Hong Kong young design talent, serving to maintain the city’s competitiveness and consolidate its role as an Asian design hub.
